Undutiful daughters claiming their futures and the uncertainties of non-marital love in Casablanca
Parole chiave:
Morocco, love, uncertainty, unmarried mothers, future.Abstract
Having Casablanca as a field site, this article situates
heterosexual love and intimacy in the lives of young women experiencing
social precariousness, including the uncertain non-status of unmarried
mothers. Ethnographic insights broadly question love ideals and practices in
Morocco, suggesting that these are simultaneously informed by socio-cultural
and political-economic processes. It will be argued that women imagine
and craft potential futures from an uncertain condition at the intersection
of normative boundaries to non-marital sexuality and childbirth and socio-
economic inequalities.
