La comunità debole: cohousing tra utopia sociale e mercato capitalistico
Altobelli, Dario
The term cohousing indicates a particular social phenomenon that makes its first appearance in Denmark in 1972. It consists of a community of people who have chosen to live together in villages or condominiums which have established in advance the rules of coexistence and in which there are areas of common use. The cohousing observed in recent years a significant spread in the world by binding to the ideas of ecological matrix, and there are some pilot projects in northern Italy.
The paper intends to present the phenomenon in its general aspects, focusing in particular on what can be called the "philosophy" that animates these communities of residence, which appear, for many reasons, "weak". An analysis made above with reference to publications and interviews with developers and some members of the Italian projects shows critical aspects. Among these, the absence of a political vision wider and more general, an ambiguous relationship with the marketing and the logic of capitalist market and, finally, a reminder at times casual to cultural values, symbols and discourses which refer to a logic of "good time past" and a now-lost "community spirit".

Rileggendo “Folklore e profitto”. Patrimoni immateriali, mercati, turismo
Bindi, Letizia
Università degli Studi del Molise
Starting from the anticipatory notes of Luigi M. Lombardi Satriani’s Folklore e profitto [1973], the paper seeks to critically articulate the interesting relation between cultural heritage, capitalistic market and mass media, updating the analysis, also, to the most recent forms of the use of media in promoting and valorizing such traditions. What emerges is a twist of cultural heritage toward consumerism that imposes to anthropologists and cultural heritage scholars new challenges and questions and a late-modern rethinking of critical categories as commodification, alienation and fetishization. A central question, finally, arises about who and what should be today the social actors asked to decide about these processes of cultural manipulation in the new post-industrial and globalized scenario, characterized, inter alia, from a generalized economic crisis.

Denutrizione, circolazione del denaro e merci. Doni e transazioni commerciali a Shala, Etiopia
Bolognari, Mario
Università di Messina
The ethnographic research with Arsi Oromo has highlighted the relation between the wedding rites and the strategies enacted to respond to the modernization imposed by the global system. We have detected a correlation between the power to control food resources, birth-rate and social peace and the inner-clan and inter-clan political and social relationships. This context has engendered a male power structure and the power of elders and clan-chiefs, who constantly negotiate between the perpetuation of cultural traditions and the need for economic innovation by referring to a complex system named «make peace».

Bricolage, spreco ed economia della festa
Bonato, Laura
Università di Torino
The issue of ceremony can be analyzed in terms of “cultural bricolage”: it consists of using different pieces made free by shattering and recombining them in a broader conceptual arena. Ceremonies, in fact, involve both tradition, parts of different rituals, and collective representations. In doing this, they succeed in their aim: identify new meanings which fit perfectly with contemporary lifestyles. Cultural bricolage, however, can also be investigated in terms of game and fun: in this respect two particular ceremonies will be analyzed: the battle of the oranges, characterizing the Historical Carnival of Ivrea, and the Tomatina of Buñol. The common point between the two ceremonies is waste. As we will see, waste is functional to the success of the ceremonies themselves, as they feature an exaggerated use of food, respectively oranges and tomatoes which are thrown to the public during the “battles”, in a sort of ritualized aggression.

Costi dei figli, valore dei figli. Economia e cultura nelle scelte riproduttive
D’Aloisio, Fulvia
Università degli Studi della Campania Luigi Vanvitelli
Economic aspects are generally considered as important variables in explaining the Italian low fertility rate: the cost of children – either direct or opportunity costs – heavily influences reproductive choices. Furthermore, we have to take into account both the availability and the costs of family services, which consistently vary across the Italian regions. Literature on family in Italy has often highlighted the importance of kinship support networks, based on the spatial proximity of the family: such networks are effective both in integrating familiar economic resources and in coping with the deficiencies of welfare.
Based on an ethnographic research focused on the reproductive behaviours and structure of the family in two Italian cities, Bologna and Naples, this study compares two groups of families and aims at showing how important role of affective kinship resources and complementary financial contributions can be in providing support and services, to the effect of influencing the household economy. In Naples and in Bologna, which are very different cities as regards income, services availability and general urban organization, kinship solidarities take different shapes and values. Such solidarities consistently support families, women especially, in affording the several costs of children, which are distributed at different levels: not only and not necessarily do the economic aspects play in the foreground.

Tra locale e globale. Sostenibilità ed empowerment nelle retoriche delle esperienze di microcredito
Guerzoni, Giovanna

Università di Bologna
Muhammad Yunus (Nobel Peace Prize 2006) success in Bangladesh, has made microcredit a globally widespread practice. Since the early nineties, microcredit has been adopted by international development organizations as the privileged strategy not only in the struggle against poverty, but also in the promotion of women’s empowerment. The paper critically explores the rhetoric underpinning the discourse on microcredit, sustainability and the impact on local communities of microfinance programs. Special attention is devoted to the case studies concerning the relationship between access to credit by women and empowerment processes.

La merce-dono. Etnografia della Vendita: promozioni, omaggi, fiducia
Mantoani, Gianluca
http://www.etnografiaretail.com
The retail surface is the result of an institutional frame who rules the way by which people interacts with commodities. It is therefore a source of information about social dynamics, an anthropological source, who must be understood on the field. This paper shows that linking goods to free gifts, a well-known sales strategy, works through the basic relational value of “trust”, usually considered far from the typical habitus of trade relations but instead fundamental to let selling good express theyr own “commodity candidacy”.

Oltre il cancello. Conflitti e strategie patrimoniali in un luogo di culto mariano
Milicia, Maria Teresa
Università di Padova
Drawing on fieldwork research during 2004-2006 in Oliveto Citra, a small town near Salerno, this paper explores the conflicts that arise out of local actors struggle over growing control on religious tourism, related to the apparitional shrine, and hertitage tourism, related to the Archaeological Museum. The economical and political strategies of local élites produced the émotions patrimoniales that contest the right of the holy Virgin, Regina del Castello, to be the primary icon of local identity.

Ripartire dai territori: il ruolo dell’artigianato artistico napoletano
Ranisio, Gianfranca
Università di Napoli Federico II
This paper analyzes some practices to enhance and promote the artistic Neapolitan handicraft, specifically the jewelry production, historically situated in Naples, inside an area specifically called, just because of its economic activities, “Borgo degli Orefici”. Handicraft is a form of technical know-how, a set of acquired and embedded skills, binding a product to specific social and cultural contexts and distinguishing it from industrial production. The artistic handicraft is a proper production of prestige goods, but this production is often in trouble with UE policies and internationalization processes, lacking of organization and synergies.
The paper therefore analyzes the actions promoted by the Comune di Napoli and the Consorzio Antico Borgo degli Orefici, with the specific aim of overcoming the isolation and making a network among different social involved actors.
Finally, the paper focuses the practices that aim on one hand to enhance and promote the productive resources in the area, on the other hand to build and redefine the image of the place and Neapolitan jewelry art. This can happen not by preserving the old craft forms, but enabling the processes of revision and re-functionalization of the assets, in relation to the social and cultural context of the historical center.

Don Nicola Jobbi: un salvatore culturale. Politiche e pratiche del patrimonio nella seconda metà del ‘900 in un’area dell’Italia centrale
Spitilli, Gianfranco
Sapienza Università di Roma
Arrived in August 1963 in the village of Cerqueto, located in the central Apennines, the young parish priest Don Nicola Jobbi inaugurates a capillary activity of sound, photographic, audiovisual documentation in a small community in which he is called to carry out its pastoral mission. Lasted for over twenty years, Jobbi's research takes on its own meaning within an extended civil and civilizing tension, and the ability to connect a small local, restricted and peripheral universe with non-local intellectual, political, social and economic processes.

L’ emigrato dasaese: turista di ritorno
Francese, Maria Teresa Mara
Università di Torino
Emigrants in the 30s of the 900 moving from Calabria overseas are made up of individuals who belong to the "culture of poverty", characterized by the absence of choices and alternatives in the total exclusion of economic and political power.
The only possible alternative, or experienced as such, is to rely on divine protection, graced by the repetition of an annual celebration, where the dollars sent home show social status changed emigrants (often absent), which not only feed the ritual, but keep alive a centuries-old tradition.
One of the many scenarios in which it engages this dynamism is the ritual of Easter Tuesday that takes place in Dasà, small agricultural town of Calabria, where Dasà’s emigrant solidarity through the aggregation of the Brotherhood of belonging to 'rise to new cultural productions, in different social relations and thus the formation of an identity "other", determined by economic wealth reached.
There are various moments of the rite in which the emigrant signals its presence emphasizing a social power and economic decision-making different from the past, in which the use of property and choices allows him to make known such a state would grow to become tourist to return .

Dal dono al souvenir. Pratiche del dare e avere tra economia del turismo e cultura dell’ospitalità
Rami Ceci, Lucilla
Sapienza Università di Roma
The Tourist economy is now the most obvious tip of the complex structure of the post –colonial societies. The tourist economy substituted in many countries defined as emerging, gradually and not without destabilizing effect on social and political relations, the traditional economy with western models of development. In these societies the tourism has become essential for the presence of an attractive cultural heritage – often valued only for the archaeological endowment – and the lack of other industrial activities. Here, just a long time, sites of historical and natural interest make up the scene of contacts between locals and visitors.
The anthropologist who critically recalls his role is seen as internal into business and symbolic practices belonging representative and cultural objects. The dynamics of knowledge are confused with those of the exchange and solicit reflections on the meaning of the gift and its utilitarian implications. The ethnographic and iconographic documents, collected by the author of the speech, during more ten years of research in South Jordan illustrate how the repertoire of cultural productions, narrative and objects is taking place into the global economic circuits. How the meaning of the hospitality changes? What do the visitors leave into the local society? It seems that the global management of the culture and its products, reproducing, displaying and placing on the market the traditional assets, translates the diversity into a pure and simple representation.
